Clear Pool Water with the Right Filtration System:
Filter systems

Filter systems ensure that your pool water is continuously circulated and cleaned. Depending on the pool size and intended use, different systems may be suitable. Sand filtration systems are particularly well suited for powerful and long-lasting water treatment, while cartridge filtration systems offer a simple and compact solution for smaller pools.

Depending on the model, sand filtration systems can be operated with traditional filter sand or modern filter media such as Filter Balls. This makes it easy to find the right filter system for your pool size, water volume and desired level of convenience, ensuring clear and clean pool water.

Which Filtration Solution Is Right for Your Pool?

  Filtration Solution Suitable For Benefits
Cartridge Filtration System Small to medium-sized pools Compact, easy to use and quick to install
Sand Filtration System with Filter Sand Medium to large pools Proven filtration technology for regular pool operation
Sand Filtration System with Filter Balls Pools of various sizes Fine filtration with low filter media weight and easy handling

Note: The use of flocculants is not recommended with cartridge filtration systems or sand filtration systems using Filter Balls. Sand filtration systems with filter sand, on the other hand, allow the use of flocculants to support water treatment.

Find the Right Filter Media

Various filter media are available for sand filtration systems. Depending on your requirements for filtration performance, handling and sustainability, filter sand, Filter Balls or Filter Wool Flakes may be the right choice. Filter sand is a proven solution and is available from Steinbach in different grain sizes. Switching from filter sand to Filter Balls is usually straightforward. Simply empty and clean the filter tank before filling it with Filter Balls.

  Filter Media Benefits
Filter Sand Proven solution for daily water treatment
Filter Balls Lightweight, easy to handle and provides particularly fine filtration
Filter Wool Flakes Sustainable alternative with high filtration performance

How Long Should a Filtration System Run?

As a general rule, the entire pool water volume should be circulated approximately twice per day. In many cases, this results in a daily filtration time of around 8 hours. The exact runtime depends on the pool’s water volume, the performance of the filtration system, pool usage and water temperature. You can easily calculate a suitable filtration time: Multiply the pool’s water volume by 2 and divide the result by the filtration system’s flow rate per hour. This provides a good guideline for the required daily runtime.

Example: For a pool with a water volume of 20,000 litres, approximately 40,000 litres of water should be circulated each day. With a filtration rate of 6,600 litres per hour, this results in a daily runtime of around 6 hours.

During hot weather, periods of intensive use or when the pool is exposed to higher levels of dirt and debris, it may be beneficial to extend the filtration time. This helps keep the water in motion and supports consistent water quality.

The Right Filtration Rate

The filtration rate determines how efficiently a sand filtration system can remove fine dirt particles from the water. If water passes through the filter media too quickly, filtration performance may be reduced. For most private pools, a filtration rate between 30 and 50 m/h provides an excellent balance between circulation and filtration efficiency.
